Your Google Analytics 4 Measurement ID looks like 'G-XXXXXXXXXX' and lives in your GA4 property's data stream settings. If you already have a GA4 property, you can find it in about 30 seconds. If you don't, creating one from scratch takes about 5 minutes. Here are both paths.

Hi — it's Matt. To turn on traffic tracking for your new website, I need your Google Analytics Measurement ID. It's a short code that looks like G-E7KTSG2QYX. This guide shows you how to find it if you already use Google Analytics, or how to set it up from scratch in about ten minutes.

A note before you start: Google updates its admin interfaces regularly, so your screens may look slightly different from the screenshots below. The settings haven't moved — they're in the same logical sections, just sometimes with new visual styling. If you can't find something, search the page for the exact label name or text me and I'll guide you through.

You already use Google Analytics

1
Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with the Google account that owns your analytics.
2
Click the gear icon labeled Admin in the bottom-left corner.
3
Under "Data collection and modification," click Data streams.
4
Click the web data stream for your website. (If you don't see one, click Add streamWeb at the top of the page, then follow Path B step 8 from there.)
5
Your Measurement ID appears at the top right of the panel that opens. It starts with G- followed by letters and numbers, like G-E7KTSG2QYX. Copy the whole code.
6
Email the code to matt@ideajarwebdesign.com or text it to 650-246-9863.
That's it. Once I have the ID, I install the tracking code on your site and confirm it's reporting data. Usually done same day.

Set up Google Analytics from scratch

If you've never used Google Analytics, this takes about ten minutes. You'll need a Google account — the same one you use for Gmail. If you don't have one, create a free account at accounts.google.com first, then come back here.

1
Go to analytics.google.com and click Start measuring.
2
Enter your Account name (use your business name). The default data sharing settings are fine. Click Next.
3
Property setup: Property name = your business name. Reporting time zone = your local time zone. Currency = USD. Click Next.
4
Business details: pick the industry closest to your business and your business size. Click Next.
5
Business objectives: pick "Generate leads" if you're a service business, or whichever option fits. You can pick more than one. Click Create.
6
Accept the Terms of Service when prompted.
7
On the "Start collecting data" screen, choose Web as your platform.
8
Fill in the data stream: Click Create stream.
9
A panel opens with your stream details. Your Measurement ID is at the top right, starting with G- (like G-E7KTSG2QYX). Copy it.
10
Email the code to matt@ideajarwebdesign.com or text it to 650-246-9863.
Once I have the ID, I install the tracking code on your site. You don't need to install anything yourself — just send the code.

Common questions

I see a long number like 12345678, not a code starting with G-. Which one do I send?
The number is your Property ID, which is internal. The Measurement ID is what I need — it always starts with G- followed by 10 letters and numbers (like G-ABC123XYZ4). It lives under Admin → Data streams → click your web stream → look for "Measurement ID" near the top right.
I can't find the Admin button.
It's the gear icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen. On smaller windows you may need to scroll down to see it.
Do I need to install anything on my website?
No. Once you send me the ID, I add the tracking code to your site and verify it's working. That's part of the build.
How do I see my analytics later?
Sign in at analytics.google.com anytime. After your site has been live for a few days I'm happy to walk you through the basics on a short call.
I sent the ID but the realtime view shows no data. What's wrong?
Three things to check: open your site in an incognito/private window with ad blockers off (ad blockers commonly hide GA4), confirm the ID was copied without typos, and give it about 30 minutes — first data sometimes takes a bit to appear. If realtime still shows zero after that, send a screenshot and I'll dig in.
I'm signed into Google but I can't find the property I just created.
You're probably signed into a different Google account than the one you used to create the property. Click your profile picture in the top right and switch accounts. If you set up GA4 with a personal Gmail and your business uses Google Workspace, this trips people up constantly.
Can I change the time zone, currency, or industry later?
Time zone and currency are editable under Admin → Property settings, but changing them mid-stream causes weird gaps in your reports — Google starts counting in the new time zone right away with no smoothing. Industry can be changed freely without affecting data. If you're unsure, check the existing settings before sending the ID.
Should I worry about cookie banners or consent requirements?
If you have customers in California, the EU, the UK, or Canada, yes — those regions require cookie consent before analytics tracking. I handle this for you when I install the tracking code, including a small cookie banner on your site that respects visitor choice. You don't need to set anything up.
Is GA4 still the right choice for my small business?
For most small businesses, yes — it's free, it's the standard, and it integrates with Google Search Console and Google Ads if you ever use those. There are simpler alternatives like Plausible or Fathom (privacy-friendly, paid), but they're worth the upgrade only if you find yourself wanting analytics and getting overwhelmed by GA4. Start with GA4 and switch later if it's not working for you.
